Prof. Fazil Marickar

He was one of the great surgical teachers of his times. His students fondly remember him as a great motivator and mentor who infused surgical wisdom and courage into their minds. He was a man who lived upto his principles.
Punctuality and time-keeping were a part of his personality. He used to reach the hospital before 8.00 am and would leave only by 5.00 pm. He insisted on his pupils to be punctual, well-behaved, well-mannered human beings. He was a doctor who spent lot of time on research activities. The numerous publications and papers from his unit will underscore this fact.
As far as ASI is concerned, he is one of the leaders who has contributed maximum. He has served the state chapter at various levels as Secretary, Chairman, GC member etc. Kerala Surgical Journal could not be published except for his herculean efforts. With his demise the future of the Journal is a big question. He was also the man who chipped out and finalised the constitution of the ASI and helped ASI to strive forward in the right path after the strugglesome years in the second decade of this millennium. As a mark of respect to this doyen of Surgery, ASI has published his orbituary in the website ( which is a rare happening).
He has left a great legacy for ASI Kerala Chapter, which we all have to adopt and follow.
Another important facet of his life was the braveness and courage with which he fought his disease for almost 4 years. He had missed none of the meetings of ASI during this period except for the last peripheral meet at MMC Calicut, when he was too sick to travel. He has shown the real courage of a surgeon during these difficult times.
He is survived by his beloved wife Prof. Khurshid Fazil, and 2 sons Mr. Shemir Marackar and Mr. Sajid Marackar. We express our heartfelt Condolences to the family on behalf of ASI Kerala Chapter. May the benevolent God help them to come out of these sorrowful days of life and live upto the principles held up by Prof. Marickar.
